RUMSON MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO KICKBACKS

A Rumson man controlled a slush fund of $800,000 used to bribe physicians in a scheme that netted more than $100 million in illegal income, federal authorities said Monday.

Cliff Antell, 38, no street address given, was one of seven people associated with Parsippany-based Biodiagnostic Laboratory Services who pleaded guilty to a kickback and money laundering scheme in federal District Court in Newark, U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman said in a press release.

The scheme, in which doctors were bribed to steer blood-test clients to BLS, victimized Medicare as well as private healthcare insurers, Fishman said.

The guilty pleas came just two months after the FBI arrested BLS president and part owner, David Nicoll; Scott Nicoll, a senior BLS employee and David Nicoll’s brother; and Craig Nordman, a BLS employee and CEO of Advantech Sales LLC – an entity used by BLS to make illegal payments.

Antell surrendered to the FBI Monday, along with three other defendants.

Also charged in April was Frank Santangelo, 43, of Boonton physician. Charges against Santangelo and BLS are pending.

The conspiracy made millions in illegal profits between 2006 and April of 2013, the feds alleged. During their guilty pleas, David and Scott Nicoll admitted that BLS made substantially more than $100 million from Medicare and private insurance companies – just from bills related to blood specimens sent to BLS by bribed doctors.

Among the companies BLS used to bribe doctors was one called Brown’s Dock Consulting LLC, owned and operated by Antell and based in Red Bank and Rumson, according to court documents. Some $800,000 paid by BLS to Brown’s Dock was used to bribe physicians and support the scheme, Antell admitted.

Here’s the information, an alternative to an indictment, that Antell pleaded guilty to: Antell, Cliff Information

NAVESINK RIVER: A PADDLE FOR A FRIEND

Jerry Conway out on the Navesink off Rumson last Sunday, warming up for this weekend’s event. (Click to enlarge)

Done1He’s got a bum shoulder, but that won’t stop Jerry Conway.

Twice in the past two years, the Middletown resident and devoted paddle-boarder has taken on big, open-water challenges to raise money for a cause that’s dear to him: the health of Kevin Kret, a Middletown man who’s been in a coma since a skateboarding accident in July, 2009.

Two years ago, Conway participated in paddle race from Catalina Island to Manhattan Beach, California. Last year, he was part of a team that paddled the Atlantic Ocean along the entire New Jersey coast – about 130 miles over eight days.

So far, he’s raised $25,000 for Kret’s care and for innovative injured-brain research. Conway also paddles to raise awareness about helmet safety.

On Saturday, Conway, 51, and his 19-year-old son Luke, will take on a lesser challenge in our beautiful Navesink River. But it’s lesser, at about 12 miles, only because Conway’s going in for surgery next month to replace his right shoulder.

“I needed to drastically reduce the distance and training due to my physical limitations,” he tells redbankgreen.

The Conways, joined in the early going by several kayakers and stand-up paddlers, including Jerry’s wife, Liz, plan depart from Rumson’s Victory Park at about 7:30 a.m.

They’ll head east toward Sea Bright, turn around and travel the length of the Navesink to the Route 35/Cooper Bridge. Conway guesses he’ll be passing Marine Park in Red Bank somewhere around 11:30 am., should any lingering runners from the post-Sheehan Classic race be on the lookout.

At the end of the paddle, plans call for the Conways to be greeted as they return to Victory Park by Kevin Kret, who will be on a raft, and his family. That should be around 12:30 p.m., if conditions cooperate, Conway says.

STUDIO OUT, SUGARUSH IN, RETAILER BACK

Chris Paseka, above, and partner Jesse Bello-Paseka plan to double the size of Sugarush, taking over space vacated by the Kathryn Barnett School of Dance.  (Click to enlarge)

By JOHN T. WARD

Rcsm2_010508Kathryn Barnett School of Dance has relocated out of town, cupcakery Sugarush is growing into Barnett’s vacated space, and Hip and Humble Home has landed back in a storefront after several months absence.

All part of the wonderful world of Red Bank’s Retail Churn.

• After 30 years in town, Kathryn Barnett has moved her East Front Street dance studio, where generations of girls have learned the art of movement, to Union Square Mall on Route 35 in Middletown, combining forces with Allegro Dance Studio.

Danny Weinberg in his newly reopened Hip and Humble Home, on Wallace Street. Below, bracelets by Violet Pepperpot are also sold there. (Click to enlarge)

• The resulting vacancy will enable next-door neighbor Sugarush to bust through the dividing wall and more than double in size with the creation of a sit-down space offering cupcakes, cakes and coffee – sans table service.

Owners and husbands Chris Paseka and Bello-Paseka opened their confectionary in late 2010, and the business took off, fending off competition. It’s not uncommon to see customers lined up outside the 800-square foot shop.

That rapid growth prompted the pair to consider a move, and to entertain invitations to leave town when a streetscape reconstruction blocked the entrance to their store and others for several months last year, Paseka acknowledged.

“But I love this town,” Paseka said, and the Barnett move solved the space problem, serving up an instant 1,200-square-foot expansion space that will also be booked for private parties.

Sugarush filed its plans with the borough this week and hopes to be on the planning board agenda for July 15, Paseka said. If all goes well, the new space will be open by early September, he said.

• Danny Weinberg, whose Hip and Humble Home imported furniture store lasted just 18 months on Broad Street, has settled on Wallace Street after a 10-month absence, taking over space vacated by Vinny Faiella’s Red Bank Surplus in March, 2012.

The store, which is now open nights and weekends only, features hand-carved wood furniture from Indonesia and Morocco. In a back room, Weinberg is also now offering vintage rock t-shirts and jewelry made by his girlfriend, Alley Gasiorowski, who does business under the name Violet Pepperpot.

The man accused of viciously stabbing a shopper at a Bed Bath and Beyond store in Middletown last January has been indicted on an attempted murder charge by a Monmouth County grand jury, authorities reported Friday.

Tyrik Haynes, a 19-year-old township resident, has been held on $1.05 million bail since the attack, in which a 29-year-old Keansburg woman was repeatedly stabbed in the Route 35 housewares store.

Here’s the announcement from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office:

A Monmouth County grand jury handed up a three-count indictment Friday charging a Middletown man with stabbing a woman inside the Bed, Bath and Beyond store in his hometown, announced Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Tyrik S. Haynes, 19, of Middletown, is charged in the indictment with one count each of first degree attempted murder, third degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

Haynes is accused of attempting to murder a 29-year-old Keansburg woman by stabbing her multiple times with a knife inside the Bed, Bath and Beyond store located at 1515 Route 35 northbound on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. Middletown Township police received multiple 911 calls around 4:09 p.m. reporting the incident inside the Bed, Bath and Beyond store.

Haynes is being lodged in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold Township, where he has been held on $1,050,000 bail as set by Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Thomas F. Scully, J.S.C.

Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutors Michael Costanzo and Melanie Falco.

Two volunteer firefighters suffered minor injuries in an early morning fire that tore through a Middletown beauty spa early Monday morning, according to a report on the Asbury Park Press website.

Police said one firefighter fell through the second floor, and a second was injured in a fall outside the Orange Skye Wellness Spa on Route 35, opposite Pine Street, where the fire was reported at about 3 a.m.  Both firefighters were treated and released from Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, the Press reported.

The newspaper said the fire was caused by a heating bed.

From the report:

Firefighters had the fire under control by about 3:45 a.m. and units remained at the scene until about 6 a.m.

Orange Skye and Spa sustained extensive damage and was unoccupied at the time of the fire, [fire department spokesman John] Isaksen said.

The fire is being investigated by the Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office.

About 50 firefighters from Middletown, River Plaza, Old Village and Community fire companies of the Middletown Fire Department responded to the call. The Middletown Fire Department Air Unit and Lincroft, Fairview, and Middletown First Aid Squads also responded, Isaksen said.

RED BANK: MONOC SETS RESPONSE TRIAL

A MONOC rig will be based in Red Bank, and respond only to in-town emergencies, during a two-month trial. (Click to enlarge)

By JOHN T. WARD

It’s MONOC to the rescue in Red Bank, at least in the near term.

Hoping to address a chronic shortage of daytime emergency volunteers, the borough’s volunteer First Aid and Rescue Squad has negotiated a two-month trial under which the nonprofit EMT operation MONOC will keep an ambulance at the Spring Street station to respond to daytime calls, officials announced Wednesday night.

As highlighted in this 2010 redbankgreen article, the Red Bank squad, which answers an average 800 calls a year, often has trouble mustering crews during the daytime. It’s longstanding problem that has led other towns to move to the costly fix of paid emergency services, or a mix of paid and unpaid.

In this case, MONOC will staff its own rig on Spring Street, and respond only to calls within the town’s borders, for two months, said Mayor Pasquale Menna. At the end of that period, MONOC and borough officials will review data and decided whether a permanent arrangement might be reached.

One question to be addressed at that point is whether to house a MONOC rig in Red Bank or a nearby town, squad officer Diana DeFazio Wieczerzak told the council.

Menna said the arrangement “is not going to cost the borough any money.”

“Free is pretty good,” said Councilman Mike DuPont.

[Services may not be free to patients, though. In some situations, MONOC, as an extension of the hospital services it provides, bills patients for Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) services, as discussed on its website.]

“As easy as it’s said is as easy as it’s done,” said Councilman Art Murphy, liaison to the emergency services operations in town. “First aid is happy, the fire chiefs are happy. We’re just going to see how it rolls.”

The first aid squad is a unit of the volunteer fire department.

The trial represents a refinement of a setup that’s been in place for about 18 months, in which MONOC serves as backup to the borough-based squad, said borough Administrator Stanley Sickels. But MONOC’s rig is based in the Bayshore area of of Middletown, and is sometimes already tied up on a call when needed in Red Bank, he said.

“So this is a more focused effort,” he said. “We felt our citizens needed to have a more focused response.”
